Stocker was a prosperous Philadelphia merchant. Sully presents him as the perfect Romantic gentleman: handsome, relaxed and with stylishly ruffled hair meant to denote creative genius. He projects a self-confidence bordering on arrogance. Sully worked in Philadelphia and was considered America’s preeminent portrait painter at mid-century. In 1808 and 1810, he studied in London with Sir Thomas Lawrence, the great Romantic portrait painter.
