In 1923 Louis Bamberger, the innovative business mogul behind Bamberger’s department store, announced that he would fund the construction of a new downtown space for Newark’s museum. Inspired by the equally visionary John Cotton Dana, the librarian-turned-progressive-education leader, Bamberger put his resources and business acumen to work building a museum unlike any other in the nation at that time: one committed to public education for working families.

From its humble beginnings in 1909 as a collection of exhibits visited by Newark’s schoolchildren on an upper floor of the public library’s downtown branch, today’s Newark Museum of Art has matured into a globally recognized institution that continues to believe in the power of partnership.

Built as “a museum of service—by, for, and of the community,” the museum now known as The Newark Museum of Art has not strayed from its founding principles as a museum of education focused on working families and the appreciation of art, science, and technology. The Museum’s story is one of partnership between like-minded for-profits and not-for-profits focused on the city of Newark, its residents, and visitors.

Businesses involved with The Newark Museum of Art preserve and showcase artistic masterpieces while providing critical educational services that uplift Newark and its surrounding communities. Corporate supporters fulfill their unique philanthropic goals while enjoying all the benefits of a museum partnership. Businesses that support the Museum and its activities gain visibility and recognition in a vibrant gathering place for a local and regional arts community, all while strengthening The Newark Museum of Art as New Jersey’s largest museum dedicated to art and science education.
