Express Yourself: Tibet, at the Crossroads of Asia

Located high in the Himalayan mountains, Tibet has been for centuries an important crossroads for trade, culture and religion, reflecting especially the influences of its neighbors India and China. Through guided discussion and hands-on activities in the Museum's Tibetan galleries and world-famous Tibetan Buddhist Altar, teachers explore ways to enhance their classroom studies of Asian culture. Participants will be introduced to assorted curriculum resource materials linking art and language arts, and will receive a CD-ROM with curriculum materials and Tibetan images for classroom use.

Visit the Tibet Information Zone, a new interactive educational gallery. Explore a mural of Tibet's snowy mountains and folk culture painted by the same artist who painted the Museum's Tibetan Altar. Play games, try on authentic Tibetan clothing and learn about Tibetan culture.

Students explore the rich artistic and cultural history of Tibet through guided discussion and hands-on activities in the Museum's Tibetan galleries. Participants examine and discuss examples of Tibetan artworks including mandalas, thangka paintings and the Museum's Tibetan Buddhist Altar. In the Museum's new Tibet Information Zone, Tibetan culture is explored through authentic clothing and narrative painting on display.

Young visitors enjoy a Tibetan gallery experience where they learn about the fierce protectors who occupy the Museum's Tibetan Buddhist altar. Based in the Museum's new Tibet Information Zone, this program includes storytelling, clothing try-on and a hands-on art activity.
