In Ming to Modern: Elevating the Everyday in Chinese Art
The Newark Museum will mark its 90th anniversary of exhibiting Chinese art with an exhibition that spotlights many of the hidden treasures of its 8,000-piece Chinese art collection. Ming to Modern: Elevating the Everyday in Chinese Art opens September 18, 2013 and runs through February 9, 2014.

Papyraceous: Recent Acquisitions,  Contemporary Works on Paper
and New Gallery dedicated to Video Art
This Fall the Newark Museum unveils new work by contemporary artists living in the United States.  These installations are the newest additions to the Museum’s permanent collection exhibition Picturing America, which features works from the colonial times through the present that have had a powerful impact on shaping American culture and identity.

NEWARK MUSEUM LAUNCHES 48TH ANNUAL LUNCHTIME JAZZ IN THE GARDEN FESTIVAL
The Newark Museum’s Jazz in the Garden series, one of the nation’s longest running jazz festivals, debuts its 48th consecutive year with Nat Adderley Jr. on Thursday, June 27 in the Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden. The 2013 Jazz in the Garden concerts are presented on five Thursdays, rain or shine, from 12:15-1:45 p.m. through August 1.

Summer Solstice Celebration
Join the Newark Museum for a Summer Solstice celebration under the stars on Friday, June 21, 2013 from 6-10 pm. The celestial event reflects the works on display in the exhibition African Cosmos: Stellar Arts, which illustrates how African knowledge of the heavens has informed and inspired the creation of art on the African continent for millennia, from ancient Egypt to the present day.

Register for Summer Fun at Camp Newark Museum
Spend the summer at Camp Newark Museum, an innovative six-week experience that brings 80 world-class art and science galleries to life. Hands-on workshops and experiments in STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and math — ignite young minds and fuel contagious curiosity.  Camp runs Monday through Friday, 9 am-4 pm, with an extended day option. All children ages 3-13 are welcome.

The Newark Black Film Festival’s Youth Cinema, a summer-long series of free children’s features and short films, debuts on July 8 at The Newark Public Library, and July 10 at the Newark Museum.

NEWARK BLACK FILM FESTIVAL  ANNOUNCES 39TH SEASON SCREENINGS Adult Cinema Begins June 19 &  Youth Cinema Begins July 8
The Newark Black Film Festival (NBFF), the longest running festival of its kind in the United States, kicks off its 39th season on June 19 at the Newark Museum with a documentary about self-taught amateur musicians from the Congo.  Youth Cinema, the accompanying summer-long series of free children’s features and short films, debuts on July 8 at The Newark Public Library, and July 10 at the Museum.

Pioneering Scholar of Nigerian Art Gifts Major Collection  To the Newark Museum
The Newark Museum has announced a major gift of modern and contemporary African art from the collection of Dr. Simon Ottenberg, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Washington, Seattle, and a pioneering scholar of modern and contemporary Nigerian art. The gift of some 145 works of art, including paintings, sculpture and works on paper, more than doubles the Museum’s existing collection of modern and contemporary African art. The strength of the collection resides in pre- and post-independence period works by Nigerian artists, with additional works by artists from South Africa, Sierra Leone and Ghana. Selected works from the collection will make their debut at the Museum in the upcoming exhibition The Art of Translation: The Simon Ottenberg Gift of Modern and Contemporary Nigerian Art, opening May 15.

NEWARK MUSEUM GALA CELEBRATES ITS STELLAR ART COLLECTION
The depth of the Newark Museum’s art and science collections will be captured on Saturday, May 11, at the Cosmic Gala, the Newark Museum’s annual black-tie fundraiser held in a beautifully-decorated tent located in the Museum’s Dreyfuss Memorial Garden.  New Jersey’s First Lady, Pat Christie, serves as Honorary Chair.

Newark Students 'Bottle Cap van Gogh' Has Its Museum Debut
Thanks to the creativity of students at South Street Elementary School in Newark, the Newark Museum will be displaying its own eco-friendly rendition of Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. The 8 by 12 foot mural will be on view April 13 – June 23, 201.

12 Re-Elected to Newark Museum Board; Five 25-Year Members Named Fellows
Five members who have maintained membership in the Newark Museum for 25 continuous years have been acknowledged as Membership Fellows -- the 104-year-old cultural institution’s most exclusive designation. The five Membership Fellows were acknowledged along with 12 newly re-elected members of the Museum Board of Trustees at the Museum’s annual meeting on February 19, 2013.

Black History Month Performance Pays Homage to Abolitionist David Walker
A play about abolitionist David Walker, co-presented in honor of Black History Month by the Newark Museum and NJPAC’s Arts Education Department, will be read Saturday, February 23 from 2-5 pm at the Museum. African Cosmos: Stellar Art
African Cosmos: Stellar Arts, the first major exhibition that focuses on the historical legacy of African cultural astronomy and its intersection with traditional and contemporary African arts, will open at the Newark Museum on February 27 and run through August 11, 2013.  This is the only appearance in the New York-New Jersey Metropolitan area for the exhibition, which was organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art and had a highly-acclaimed six-month run there.

Special Newark Museum Exhibit Compliments Assisi Gathering
A selection of 21 sculptures from the Newark Museum's Asian collection form the exhibition Loving Devotion: Visions of Vishnu from the Newark Museum, which will be on display as part of the Fetzer Institute's Global Gathering on September 19-23, 2012, in Assisi, Italy.  It will be the exhibition’s sole venue.  Bringing together 500 thought leaders from around the world, the Global Gathering will show the power love and forgiveness can have in the world.
