This 14-day program combines historic cities and mountain villages as we tour the highlights of the Swiss and Austrian Alps. We begin with a two-night stay in Lucerne, Switzerland, including an ascent to Mt. Pilatus by cog railway train and aerial gondola as well as a ferry ride along Lake Lucerne. Next, we board the Glacier Express panoramic train for our journey to the pedestrian village of Zermatt, gateway to the Matterhorn. We ascend the Gornergrat glacier by mountain railway for spectacular views of the Matterhorn. Following our two-night stay, we travel by coach to Lugano in the Italian-speaking region of Ticino, stopping en route in Stresa, Italy on the shores of Lake Maggiore. During our three-night stay, we explore Ticino with a private cruise on Lake Lugano including Morcote, the “most beautiful village in Switzerland,” as well as visits to the historic castle of Bellinzona and the colorful lakeside town of Ascona. We then drive north towards Austria, stopping to visit the oldest winery in Europe as well as the tiny principality of Liechtenstein, before arriving in Seefeld in the Austrian region of Tyrol. Our two-night stay in this charming village includes a visit to the Olympic city of Innsbruck with an ascent to the Nordkette mountains by cable car for stunning views over the city.
