Sandy's Circus by Tanya Lee Stone is the tale of Alexander "Sandy" Calder, a new kind of artist who constructed circus sculptures that moved and performed.

Art Activity: Shape Up
Saturdays & Sundays

After viewing our exciting new exhibition, Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, 1920s-50s, construct an abstract masterpiece using geometric shapes and colors.

Science Activity: Electrifying Science

Explore electricity and electrons in some hair-raising experiments.

Storytime in the Galleries
Saturday, April 10, 12:30–1:30 pm
Screen of Frogs: An Old Tale, written and illustrated by Sheila Hamanaka, tells the tale of a wealthy, though spoiled, Japanese man who discovers a new respect for nature after a dream about a magical frog.

Colors, Shapes, and Lines Family Day
Sunday, April 11, 12:30–4:30 pm
Join us for a day filled with discovery about colors, shapes, and lines in art and nature.  Participate in art and science activities, try a scavenger hunt, watch films, and listen to stories in the galleries.

Art Activity: Slip and Slide
Saturdays & Sundays
1–4 pm
Visit the Japanese Galleries to see our magnificent fusuma, sliding doors painted with flowers and grasses from every season.  Using rice paper, make your own and decorate it with spring flowers.

Science Activity: Nano Days
Saturdays & Sundays, 1–4 pm
Explore the apparently invisible world of nanotechnology through hands-on workshops.

Saturday, April 3, 1 pm
Fire Escapes: Danger and Survival
Enjoy monthly tours and art-making workshops in conjunction with our exciting exhibition, Fire Escapes: Danger and Survival.  Learn about the changing shapes and capabilities of fire trucks throughout Newark's history.  Climb into the cab of a real fire truck, then build a model fire truck to take home.

Storytime in the Galleries
Saturday, May 8, 12:30–1:30 pm
Written and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein, The Mountains of Tibet tells the story of a Tibetan woodcutter who, after dying, must choose whether to go to heaven or be reborn anywhere in the universe.

Art Activity: Chip Off the Old Block
Saturdays & Sundays
1–4 pm
View Robert Rauschenberg's, Tibetan Locks and Keys, a sculpture made of colorful building blocks collaged with images from Tibet.  Using folding techniques, families construct their own miniature geometric forms.

Science Activity: The Sky's the Limit!
Saturdays & Sundays, 1–4 pm
Look up to the sun and stars in preparation for Astro Fest, celebrating our newly renovated Dreyfuss Planetarium.  Hands-on investigations will answer your questions about the sun and clouds.
